The Grenchen foundation predates the Certina name

Certina dates its origin to 1888, when brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth opened a watch-parts and movement factory in Grenchen. Its timeline says the brand name Certina was officially registered in 1939, following the earlier Grana name.

This chronology is useful for dating context but does not identify a particular vintage watch. 13

DS means Double Security

Certina states that the first DS Concept watch appeared in 1959 and calls DS “Double Security.” The history page says that initial concept brought water resistance up to 20 bar among its protection features.

The original concept does not establish the pressure rating, seals or safe water use of every DS-marked watch today. 12

The turtle is a brand symbol

Certina describes its turtle-shell symbol as representing robustness and longevity, and says it has been a personal symbol since the 1960s. The official account links it to the brand's association with durability and water.

A turtle motif is contextual evidence, not proof of model authenticity or condition. 12

Expeditions are historical context

Certina's official timeline documents watches on the 1960 Dhaulagiri expedition, Sealab II in 1965 and Tektite in 1969. These illustrate the brand's stated sport and underwater-research history.

They do not certify that another Certina reference is appropriate for a comparable environment. 1

Current styles need current records

The current Certina collection organizes watches around styles including Aqua, Vintage, Traveler, Dress, Modern, Outdoor and Skeleton, and lists automatic and quartz examples. A technical claim should remain tied to its exact contemporary reference.

Do not transfer current features backward to historic watches. 4

Keep conclusions source-bounded

The sources support Certina's 1888 origin, 1939 name, 1959 DS introduction, turtle symbol and stated expedition context. They do not authenticate a watch, validate current water resistance or determine value.

Use exact reference documents and inspection for consequential decisions. 12
