A modern beginning, not an eighteenth-century continuation
De Bethune's official account starts with Denis Flageollet and David Zanetta in 2002. It places the manufacture in L’Auberson, near Sainte-Croix in the Swiss Jura. The brand name refers to a historical figure, but the business itself is modern.
That makes the distinction between inspiration and succession especially useful. A contemporary watch can engage deeply with old mechanical ideas without having been made by an institution dating from that earlier period. Read the founding year and the historical reference as different parts of the story. 1
Recognising the design vocabulary
Blue surfaces, celestial displays and unusual case architecture provide recognisable routes into De Bethune's work. Its technical timeline discusses titanium blueing, a spherical moon-phase display and pivoting lugs. These are specific developments, not a checklist that every De Bethune watch must satisfy.
For a comparison, first identify the reference. Look separately at the display, case material, lug construction and movement. A shared blue colour or family resemblance cannot establish that two references have the same mechanism or dimensions. 1
WatchBox invested in De Bethune
The August 2021 company announcement states that WatchBox agreed and signed a majority investment in De Bethune, with closing expected in the following days. The direction is explicit: the investment went into the manufacture. Reversing that sentence would change the transaction entirely.
The statement also described Pierre Jacques and Denis Flageollet retaining operational and board roles at that time. It is a dated announcement, not a current executive directory or a complete present-day shareholder register. 2
Creative independence and outside investment
De Bethune uses independence to describe its freedom of creation. That expression should not be read as a statement that the business has never had outside investors. The documented WatchBox transaction and the manufacture's creative positioning can coexist.
The 1916 Company's current brand page also describes the 2021 WatchBox partnership and presents De Bethune collections. It provides a route into the present catalogue, but does not, by itself, supply an exact ownership percentage or a complete account of every later corporate change. 13
Finding the right family and reference
The 1916 Company groups De Bethune watches under names including DB25, DB27, DB28, DB29, DB Eight and DB Kind of Two. Use these as catalogue families, then narrow to the precise reference and generation.
A family name is not a substitute for the specifications of the watch in front of you. Record the calibre, dimensions and functions from matching product documentation. Historical technical milestones explain the brand's development, while a reference-specific record explains what a particular watch contains. 3
An owner's research and service file
Keep the full reference, purchase documents and any prior service records together. If an operating instruction or service promise comes from a seller, note who issued it and when. A retailer's warranty and the manufacture's own support arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable.
For a technical question, provide the exact watch identity rather than asking about the brand in general. This is particularly valuable where visually related watches have different displays or mechanisms. The history here supplies context, not an authentication or a promise that a specific repair will be accepted. 32
