Nearly eight decades before the SUB
Doxa's official chronology begins with Georges Ducommun opening his business in 1889. The SUB family arrived much later, in 1967. Treating every Doxa as a diving watch would erase a substantial earlier history and make older pocket or dress watches unnecessarily confusing.
Start with the object, not today's strongest brand association. A watch without an orange dial or rotating bezel can still belong to Doxa's historical production. Its case, movement and documentary context need their own investigation. 1
The SUB as a purpose-led design
The SUB became recognisable through a combination of case design, legible dial and timing bezel. Specialist histories connect its development with the growth of recreational diving in the 1960s. The orange Professional identity is part of that story, but it is not a specification shared by every watch in the family.
When comparing a vintage SUB with a modern version, treat them as separate references. Similar proportions or colour do not establish identical dimensions, movement, construction or performance. Read the technical information for the exact generation. 23
Cousteau and a distribution relationship
Doxa's history describes Jacques-Yves Cousteau negotiating American distribution through US Divers and explains the Aqua Lung dial logo associated with that relationship. That is a historical commercial connection, not proof that an individual watch belonged to Cousteau or his team.
For a watch advertised with a special provenance claim, ask for documentation linking that object to the person or expedition. A logo can be useful to research, but its appearance alone cannot establish an ownership history or confirm that a dial remains original. 1
The Conquistador claim needs a defined scope
Doxa dates its helium-valve Conquistador milestone to 1969. The specialist account also discusses that model, while other summaries have used a different year. This guide attributes the 1969 date to the brand rather than using it to settle every priority dispute surrounding helium-valve development.
A historical feature is not evidence of a vintage watch's present sealing condition. Do not use a collectible's original depth rating or bezel markings as contemporary diving guidance. Any proposed water use needs an appropriate current assessment of the actual watch. 13
Jenny-family acquisition and later leadership records
The brand's chronology records the Jenny-family acquisition in 1997 and a move of headquarters to Biel/Bienne. It separately records Walca Group and Doxa leadership appointments in 2019. Keeping these dates attached avoids presenting an old appointment entry as a freshly verified executive list.
Ownership, management and a collection relaunch are different events. None, on its own, identifies the manufacture year of a watch. A dated receipt or a matched period reference is more useful for placing an individual example. 1
Colour names do not replace references
Professional, Sharkhunter and other names can help navigate the SUB family, but they should be retained alongside the full model and reference. A colour designation is not a complete description of the mechanism, generation or case.
Before seeking service, photograph the visible markings and gather the purchase and repair records. If a seller's description collapses SUB 300, SUB 300T and later reissues into one object, ask for the missing reference-level information. This history offers orientation, not a serial-number dating system or an originality verdict. 32
Key dates
Ownership and continuity
Doxa's history begins well before its diving-watch identity; the SUB launch is a product milestone rather than the company's foundation. 1
Identification and service
For an individual watch, record the complete reference, serial, dial, case, and movement markings and compare them with dated primary documentation.
A brand history cannot authenticate, appraise, or establish the provenance of a particular watch.
Evidence and limits
How the claims are supported
- source stated claim
Doxa's chronology distinguishes its 1889 origins from the 1967 SUB introduction.
- source stated claim
The supplied specialist histories describe the SUB as a 1960s diving-watch development, with orange-dial and bezel features.
- source stated claim
The brand describes Cousteau's US Divers distribution agreement and related Aqua Lung dial branding.
- source stated claim
Doxa's own timeline dates the Conquistador milestone to 1969; priority and current condition are separate questions.
- source stated claim
The official history dates the Jenny-family acquisition to 1997 and identifies a separate 2019 leadership entry.
- source stated claim
The supplied model histories distinguish SUB references and later interpretations; a family or colour name is incomplete identification.
Known limits
- No definitive Rolex/Doxa invention-priority ruling or military-issue count is asserted.
- The 2019 leadership record is not treated as a current corporate register.
- Vintage water resistance and safe diving use cannot be established from historical specifications.
