A watchmaker's 1884 company
Edox's official history says Christian Ruefli-Flury established his own watchmaking company in Biel in 1884 after making a pocket watch for his wife Pauline.
A foundation date does not date an individual watch. 1
The name and emblem have distinct dates
The official history says Ruefli-Flury called the company Edox, explaining the name as ancient Greek for measuring time. It dates the hourglass's official use as a company symbol to 1900.
A logo can be helpful context but does not authenticate a watch alone. 1
The mid-century business expanded
Edox says that by 1955 it employed up to 500 watchmakers and had moved into larger production facilities. This describes an historic company milestone, not a current headcount or production method.
Use period documentation for specific objects. 1
Current company positioning
An official Edox marketing document describes the brand as Swiss-made, hand-assembled, family and independent, located in the Swiss Jura. These are source-stated current positioning claims.
They do not establish every historic reference's specification. 2
Water-resistance claims need model context
The same Edox material discusses a water-resistance system using crown double gaskets. Technical features should be checked against the exact reference and period.
Never infer waterproof performance from a logo or broad brand identity. 2
Keep conclusions source-bounded
Official material supports the 1884 foundation, 1900 hourglass, 1955 expansion and stated current Swiss positioning. It does not authenticate or value a specific watch.
Record exact reference, serial, movement, dial, case and provenance evidence. 12
Key dates
Ownership and continuity
Edox's official story links an 1884 Biel foundation with its 1900 hourglass emblem and later production expansion. 1
Identification and service
For an individual watch, record the complete reference, serial, dial, case, and movement markings and compare them with dated primary documentation.
A brand history cannot authenticate, appraise, or establish the provenance of a particular watch.
