The curve is the complication

Ari’s shape forced a change in the mechanical layout. Turning the wheels of a flat movement out of their original plane creates clearance problems; Leube therefore rebuilt the architecture around an arc and adapted the Record-derived train and escapement. Curved plates and bridges also changed how the parts could be held and machined. Her account names custom holders and local toolmaker Jens Frei’s assistance, alongside specialised sapphire and strap suppliers. The result is an unusually concrete example of design changing both the mechanism and the manufacturing process, rather than an exterior styling exercise. 12

Prescher’s workshop as a bridge from restoration to original manufacture

Leube describes restoration as an important foundation, then identifies a different step in 2005: building Prescher’s double-retrograde and multi-axis mechanisms. That testimony connects a particular kind of workshop learning to her later independent practice without making her the inventor of Prescher’s complications. By the end of 2007 she had started her own business, and the Ari was publicly documented in 2011. The chronology is useful because employment, independent establishment and first presentation are different milestones, each with its own evidence. 23

Evidence and limits

How the claims are supported
  1. source stated claim

Ari uses a curved movement based on heavily modified Record 302 components; the maker describes intermediate pinions, a reversed escape wheel and altered pallet fork to display the mechanism from above.

  2. source stated claim

Leube says curved parts had to be milled from blocks and required custom holders; she chose curvature after trying different diameters on several wrists.

  3. source stated claim

Leube credits herself with Ari’s drawings, movement, case, crown and buckle; she names Swiss sapphire manufacture, German straps, engraving by John W. Thompson, and tooling assistance from Jens Frei.

  4. source stated claim

Leube says she began independent-watch manufacturing work with Thomas Prescher in 2005, building double-retrograde mechanisms and multi-axis flying tourbillons.

  5. source stated claim

In her July 2011 interview, Leube dates starting her own business in Sydney to the end of 2007.

  6. verified fact

The June 2011 workshop visit documents the Ari after its Baselworld presentation, including the visitor trying it on.
