G-Shock within Casio

G-Shock is a watch product line made by Casio Computer Co., Ltd., rather than a separately incorporated watch company. Casio's official G-Shock history presents the line as an internal development led by Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe.

That relationship identifies the manufacturer, but it does not establish the age, specification or authenticity of an individual watch. 1

The 1981 development brief

Casio's retrospective and an independent interview with Ibe date the development effort to 1981. The brief became known as the Triple 10 concept: a 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance and survival of a 10-metre fall.

These were development targets for the original project, not a substitute for checking the published specification of a later model. 12

DW-5000C and the 1983 launch

The first G-Shock, the DW-5000C, was released in 1983. Casio's account describes a shock-resistant structure that protected the watch module inside the case, while Ibe's interview recounts a development process involving more than 200 prototypes.

The 1983 date belongs to the product-line launch; it is not the founding date of an independent G-Shock company. 12

Model number and module number

A G-Shock case back can carry both a model code and a separate numeric module number. Casio identifies the model number as a hyphenated combination of letters and numbers; specialist documentation explains that the boxed module number is the practical key for finding the correct instruction manual.

Record both identifiers because visually similar watches can use different modules, while one module can appear across multiple references. 34

Features vary by exact reference

Solar charging, radio time synchronisation, Bluetooth connectivity and other functions are model-dependent. The G-Shock name alone does not prove that a watch has any one of those features.

Use the exact reference and module number with the applicable Casio manual or product record before describing functions, battery requirements or setting procedures. 34

Research a G-Shock watch

Photograph the dial and case back, record the full model code and boxed module number, and note the display layout, materials and functions. Compare those details with the matching Casio manual and dated product documentation.

A matching code is an identification lead, not by itself proof of authenticity, condition or originality. 34

Ownership and continuity

Casio's records and an independent interview trace G-Shock from a 1981 shock-resistance project to the 1983 DW-5000C, while case-back model and module numbers remain the practical route to model-specific documentation. 1234

Identification and service

For an individual watch, record the complete reference, serial, dial, case, and movement markings and compare them with dated primary documentation.

A brand history cannot authenticate, appraise, or establish the provenance of a particular watch.

Evidence and limits

How the claims are supported
  1. verified observation

G-Shock is a Casio watch product line developed within Casio Computer Co., Ltd.

  2. source stated claim

Casio and an independent interview with Kikuo Ibe date the G-Shock development effort to 1981 and the first model to 1983.

  3. source stated claim

The original Triple 10 development brief called for a 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance and survival of a 10-metre fall.

  4. source stated claim

Casio describes a shock-resistant structure protecting the module, and Ibe recounts testing more than 200 prototypes during development.

  5. source stated claim

Casio watches use a model number on the case back, while G-Shock documentation identifies the separate boxed module number as the key used to locate the applicable manual.

Known limits

  • This guide does not authenticate or value an individual watch.
  • G-Shock features vary by exact reference and module; line-level history does not establish an individual watch's specification.
