Genta the designer is not Genta the company

This label resolves to Gérald Genta’s personal watch-design practice, which must be distinguished from the eponymous company he later founded. Sotheby’s dates Genta’s freelance work to 1959; the estate dates his own company’s foundation to 1969.

The Royal Oak was designed for Audemars Piguet; the 1970 concept preceded the watch’s 1972 launch. Patek Philippe’s Genta-designed Nautilus debuted in 1976.

Design attribution to Genta does not transfer the manufacture of Universal Genève, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe or IWC watches to his independent practice. The estate documents both commissioned designs for other brands and watches produced under Genta’s own company name. 123

The work and why it matters

Sotheby’s gives the designer’s full name as Gérald Charles Genta, born in Geneva in 1931. Genta’s Universal Genève Polarouter design was released in 1954; the name later became Polerouter.

IWC’s Genta-designed Ingenieur SL also launched in 1976. The estate credits Evelyne Genta with developing the company’s international markets during 1983–1999 while Gérald concentrated on design. 12

People, production and attribution

The estate places divestment of the eponymous company to an Asian owner in 1999; this is not a fully verified transaction chain. The estate records Genta’s death in August 2011.

The practice connects design authorship across rival houses; the commissioned object and its designer should remain separate linked identities. Gérald Genta Heritage is an estate/heritage reference, not evidence that the original freelance atelier is still operating. 213
