An American idea in German-speaking Switzerland
IWC's official story begins in 1868, when Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen. IWC frames the idea as a blend of American production technology and Swiss horological craftsmanship, away from the traditional French-speaking Swiss watch centers.
That origin explains much of the brand's tone. IWC often speaks less like a jewelry Maison and more like an engineering house: purpose, precision, manufacture process and practical watch families matter. 12
Pilot's Watches are a core identity, not just a dial style
IWC's history dates its first Special Pilot's Watch to 1936, with a rotating bezel for take-off times and an antimagnetic escapement. IWC's pilot-watch material describes the watch as designed for aviation demands and later points to Mark 11 and Big Pilot references as major milestones.
For an owner, the lesson is simple: pilot styling is common, but actual historical significance depends on reference, era, movement, case construction, dial originality and whether military or civilian claims are properly documented. 24
Portugieser came from marine-chronometer thinking
IWC's history dates the birth of the Portugieser to 1939, when Portuguese importers ordered large wristwatches with high-precision pocket watch calibres. IWC describes the result as the first Portugieser model leaving its workshops.
That makes the Portugieser different from a normal dress watch. Its importance sits in oversized wristwatch proportions, pocket-watch movement heritage and marine-chronometer legibility, not simply in being an expensive round watch. 2
Pellaton, Ingenieur and antimagnetic engineering
IWC's timeline credits Albert Pellaton with the development of IWC's first automatic movement and says the calibre 85 debuted in 1955 in the first Ingenieur. IWC's Ingenieur material describes that model as the first antimagnetic wristwatch from Schaffhausen for civilian use, aimed at engineers and professionals exposed to magnetic fields.
This is useful because Ingenieur is both a technical and design story. Later Gerald Genta-linked Ingenieur SL language matters, but the original purpose was protection and reliability for a changing technical world. 35
Aquatimer and materials widen the engineering lane
IWC's timeline says the Aquatimer was unveiled in 1967, with 200 metres of water resistance and an internal rotating bezel for dive times. Richemont's IWC profile now emphasizes chronographs, calendars and advanced material engineering in a modern production facility.
That shows how IWC's owner research spreads across several domains: aviation, marine chronometer style, antimagnetic watches, dive watches, perpetual calendars and modern cases in titanium, ceramics or related materials. 36
Current context and owner research
Richemont describes IWC as founded in 1868 in Schaffhausen and currently rooted in engineering excellence, distinctive design and uncompromising quality. It places IWC within Richemont's Maison portfolio, which gives current-service and corporate context without changing the historical reference work an individual watch needs.
Before judging an IWC, identify the reference, case back markings, movement, dial, hands, crown, bracelet or strap, service records and any military or special-edition provenance. The brand story tells you what questions to ask; the watch's own evidence has to answer them. 126
Key dates
Ownership and continuity
IWC's continuity runs through Schaffhausen manufacturing, Jones's American-Swiss engineering premise, aviation instruments, large Portugieser wristwatches, antimagnetic Ingenieur design and modern Richemont-backed engineering identity. 1246
