A post-reunification independent manufacture
NOMOS Glashütte describes itself as owner-managed and founded by Roland Schwertner in 1990. Its official design history says the first collection arrived in 1992 with six hand-wound stainless-steel watches, including Tangente, Ludwig, Orion and Tetra.
This is a modern company with a distinct origin, not a continuation claim over every earlier Glashütte enterprise. Reference, movement and era matter when interpreting older NOMOS watches. 12
Design is a useful but limited identifier
NOMOS links its design language to Deutscher Werkbund and Bauhaus ideas, while describing the original collection as a modern everyday mechanical proposition. Tangente remains its most recognizable family, but shape and typography alone are not enough to establish a reference or originality.
Use case measurements, dial layout, movement, serial and reference documentation alongside design recognition. 2
Glashütte and DUW need exact reading
NOMOS explains that Glashütte origin protection now requires at least 50 percent of essential manufacturing stages in the town, and its own material describes in-house mechanical calibre work. The brand identifies its calibre line as Deutsche Uhrenwerke NOMOS Glashütte, or DUW.
The practical research path is to identify the movement and generation first, then match it to the model and production-period documentation rather than treating every NOMOS watch as identical. 34
Tangente is a family, not one watch
NOMOS presents Tangente as a lasting part of its original design language. Dimensions, winding systems, dials and movements can still differ materially among Tangente references.
Begin with the exact reference and movement instead of relying only on the familiar dial design. 2
Origin protection is not an authentication shortcut
The Glashütte Regulation describes a protected production standard, and NOMOS explains how its own watches meet that context. It does not prove that an individual unsigned or altered watch is original.
Use serial, movement and reference-level evidence for object identification. 34
Document the movement generation
NOMOS' DUW page makes movement nomenclature a useful research anchor. Photograph the movement when appropriate and compare it with official period documentation.
That method is particularly helpful for watches whose case and dial designs continued across multiple production periods. 342
Key dates
Ownership and continuity
NOMOS Glashütte is a post-1990 independent manufacture whose identity joins modern design, proprietary mechanical calibre work and Glashütte production. 1234
Identification and service
For an individual watch, record the complete reference, serial, dial, case, and movement markings and compare them with dated primary documentation.
A brand history cannot authenticate, appraise, or establish the provenance of a particular watch.
