The commission that required a repeater to fit somebody else’s watch

Renaud describes a constrained engineering brief: develop a modern repeater that could fit an existing calibre. That distinction changes the history from a story of two people making an entire grand complication into a collaboration between a client, an existing calendar platform and a specialist complication developer. The named watch in later reporting is IWC ref. 3770. The useful technical question is not simply how many complications the watch contains, but how an added striking mechanism must coexist with the space, controls and energy demands of what is already there. The surviving account establishes that integration problem, while detailed drawings are still needed to explain the exact solution. Reported expansion into production later introduced a different problem—financing manufacture—which external reporting connects to Audemars Piguet’s 1992 involvement. 123

A workshop is not one pair of hands

The career accounts reveal a division of work that a list of famous alumni would conceal. Forestier-Kasapi is linked to development leadership; Strehler to prototyping; Bart Grönefeld to team work on chiming and chronograph mechanisms; Tim to training, assembly and quality control. Renaud’s account adds his father Michel as an early source of technical and organisational help. These are different contributions, and none justifies assigning every company invention to every person who passed through the workshop. Papi’s later finishing book also points to the problem of explaining invisible labour: a reader can see a polished surface without knowing what grade of finish, preparation or hand work it represents. A useful business history can therefore follow a movement from design through prototype, assembly and finishing while naming only contributors whose roles are actually documented. 45612
