Predecessor business and formation

Epson traces its foundation to Daiwa Kogyo, established on 18 May 1942 in Suwa; its history identifies Hisao Yamazaki as the founder. In May 1959, Daiwa took over Daini Seikosha’s Suwa Plant business and became Suwa Seikosha. This was a plant-business transfer, not the absorption of all Daini Seikosha.

Suwa Seikosha and Epson Corporation merged in November 1985 to form Seiko Epson Corporation. Epson’s corporate timeline links the Suwa lineage to Seiko Marvel in 1956 and Quartz Astron 35SQ in December 1969; these are Seiko-branded works, not evidence that Seiko Epson already existed under that name. 123

Brands, sales and ownership

Orient Watch became an Epson subsidiary in 2009. Epson absorbed certain Orient Watch operations in April 2017 and records the Orient Star Mechanical Moon Phase that June. For the September 2012 GPS Solar Astron, Epson’s timeline distinguishes its development role from sales by Seiko Watch Corporation.

Epson’s timeline records a Tokyo Stock Exchange listing in June 2003 and transition to the Prime Market in April 2022. Epson’s shareholder disclosure for 30 June 2026 lists Seiko Group Corporation at 3.43%. Epson is therefore not correctly described as a wholly owned Seiko Group subsidiary. 24

Engineering and design contributions

Grand Seiko’s engineering history identifies Yoshikazu Akahane as a Suwa Seikosha engineer whose work led toward Spring Drive; the account describes a collaborative development history rather than a complete product made by one person. Kunio Koike is identified as the circuit-development specialist in the Epson team discussed in Grand Seiko’s 9R Spring Drive history.

Osamu Takahashi is identified as an Epson development engineer in the 9R programme and in the later manual-winding Spring Drive work. Kazunori Hoshino is identified as the designer working with Takahashi on the manual-winding Spring Drive project; design and engineering contributions are separately attributed.

The 2019 Grand Seiko account allocates calibre 9R02 to Micro Artist Studio and 9R31 to Shinshu Watch Studio; these are not interchangeable names for the same production team. 56

Adjustment and craft relationships

The Seiko Museum associates Kiyoko Nakayama with the Epson lineage and identifies her as an adjuster recognized in the 1968 Geneva observatory competition. The Seiko Museum places Tokuichi Inagaki in the Epson lineage and records adjustment work recognized at Neuchâtel in 1967 and Geneva in 1968.

The Seiko Museum identifies Yoshifusa Nakazawa as an Epson-lineage assembler and adjuster responsible for final assembly and adjustment of the Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie. NH WATCH’s biography places Keisuke Kano in jewellery-watch work at Epson after graduation in 2000, at Tiffany from 2006, and at NH WATCH from May 2022. His later NH dial engraving should not be attributed to current Epson employment.

The eight supplied people are documented employees, engineers, designers or craftspeople in the Epson/Suwa lineage, not a list of Seiko Epson founders or verified current officers. 7856
