449 records · 12 fields · matching CSV and JSON

The build compares every public CSV row with its JSON record before publishing either format. That verifies file parity and schema integrity, not every historical claim.

The Global Watch Brand History Index is a free-to-read research release containing 449 supplied records in matching CSV and JSON files. It covers makers, maisons, manufacturers, suppliers, licensed marks, sub-brands, historic names and revivals. Version 2026-08-24 has 12 fields per record and retains the source labels and verification notes used by the complete encyclopedia.

The index is designed for retrieval and research, not for instant ownership, authenticity or valuation conclusions. A row can point to a useful source trail while still requiring a direct source check before its claims influence a listing, appraisal, estate record, article or transaction.

What the dataset contains

Every record describes one supplied name and keeps classification separate from historical significance, current status, continuity and source basis. The dataset intentionally includes commercial forms that a simple list of active consumer brands would omit, because movement makers, retailer signatures, licensed names, absorbed factories and revivals can all matter when identifying a watch or interpreting a dial.

The index does not claim to enumerate every name ever used on a watch. Private labels, territorial trademarks, short-lived workshops, spelling variants and incomplete archives make a literally complete global count impossible.

Data dictionary

Table: Data dictionary
Field Meaning Important limit
brand Supplied display name for the indexed entity or commercial name A shared or revived name may refer to more than one legal entity over time
region_group Broad research grouping used for navigation Not a legal origin ruling or country-of-manufacture statement
historical_origin Concise supplied origin description Can differ from present headquarters, ownership or production
origin_or_brand_date Relevant supplied workshop, company, mark or revival date The date type must be read with the history and verification note
classification Maker, maison, supplier, licensed mark, sub-brand or another commercial form Categories simplify relationships that can change by period
status_as_of_2026_08_24 Dated supplied status snapshot Must be rechecked after the snapshot date
owner_or_controller_as_of_2026_08_24 Dated supplied owner/controller description Ownership is not the same as manufacturing origin, service responsibility or trademark scope
continuity_grade Editorial code for continuity, interruption, absorption or revival A grade is a research aid, not a legal or quality judgment
coverage_level Depth available in the supplied manuscript Does not mean independent review is complete
historical_significance Concise supplied historical context A summary cannot replace the cited record or full chronology
verification_note Known ambiguity, wording guardrail or recheck need A note identifies a limit; it is not proof that every other fact is settled
source_keys Labels pointing into the shared research bibliography They are not yet a one-to-one source URL map for every row

Method and evidence boundary

The index accompanies the complete 449-name global encyclopedia, whose shared bibliography contains the underlying research trail. Records distinguish at least five kinds of date—founder/workshop, legal company, trademark or dial name, commercial brand, and current entity or revival—because collapsing them into one “founded” year can mislead readers.

Source labels describe which records and source classes informed a row. They do not establish that every sentence has a direct row-level URL, that every current owner has been independently rechecked, or that a named reviewer has approved the release. Read the verification note, consult the full bibliography, and recheck consequential claims against a current direct source.

Versioning and change policy

The dated CSV and JSON files are immutable release aliases for version 2026-08-24. The undated aliases point to the current release. A machine-readable manifest records the row count, field list, file paths and SHA-256 checksums so a downloaded copy can be compared with the published files.

Future material changes will receive a new dated version. Corrections should preserve the reason for the change rather than silently rewriting a historical release. Cosmetic presentation changes to the landing page do not create a new dataset version.

Reuse and rights boundary

The files are available without an account for inspection and personal research. No dataset-specific open-data licence is asserted for this release. The site’s terms of use permit linking and reasonable quotation, while third-party names and source material retain their respective rights. Report a correction

Use the corrections process to identify the exact brand, field, current value, proposed value and supporting direct source. A correction request is evidence to review, not automatic proof that a row should change.
