The Global Watchmaking Tool History Index is a normalized public release of a supplied 326-entry research corpus. It covers hand tools, turns, lathes, workholding, wheel and pinion equipment, escapement and balance tools, jeweling, cases and crystals, decorative processes, cleaning and lubrication, timing, metrology, factory machinery, microfabrication, documentation, training, calibration, and safety controls.

The release has two purposes. It makes the complete paper searchable by stable WT ID, and it records exactly how the public data differs from the untouched source package. It does not claim that only 326 watchmaking tools or processes have existed.

What is public

The primary release consists of matching, normalized CSV and JSON files with 326 records and 13 fields. Current aliases point to the latest public version; dated 2026-08-24-r1 files preserve this release. A separate 33-record source-key register is available in CSV and JSON so readers can decode the category-level source-family labels.

The machine-readable manifest records:

  • public and source versions;
  • row and field counts;
  • public file paths, byte sizes, and SHA-256 hashes;
  • raw-source filenames and hashes;
  • every field rename;
  • the exact bounded prose transform;
  • review, evidence, date, status, safety, and licensing boundaries.

The manifest does not hash itself. That avoids a circular checksum whose value would change when written into the file it describes.

Why the source significance field was replaced

Every one of the 326 source records used the same generated sentence pattern for historical_significance. The template lowercased the first letter of primary_function and inserted it after “made,” producing constructions such as “made supports,” “made generates,” and “made controls.” The field was grammatically defective and contained no independently written, tool-specific significance.

The public release therefore removes historical_significance and creates editorial_context using only three supplied values: the tool name, precision-regime label, and primary function. For example:

In the supplied index, Watchmaker’s bench is assigned the precision-regime label “freehand and visual control”. The recorded primary function is “Supports posture, part control, and repeatable handwork at the watchmaker’s station.”

The build requires all 326 source values to match the known defective template exactly. If future source prose differs, the build stops instead of silently overwriting new editorial work.

Source-register boundary

All 33 defined source keys are used, and no index row cites an undefined key. Each of the twelve broad categories uses a shared source-key bundle. The register provides a citation, source type, and general use for each key, but it does not provide a URL, page or section locator, edition identifier for every item, access date, rights record, or claim-by-claim verification result.

That means a row is a research lead. Before relying on it in an article, catalogue, appraisal, restoration decision, training document, or transaction, follow the key into the complete paper and bibliography, identify the exact claim, and recheck the direct edition, object record, current standard, manufacturer manual, or other appropriate source.

Safety and operational boundary

Historical descriptions and supplied safety notes are not instructions for using a tool. Radiation, solvents, plating chemicals, abrasive dust, lasers, EDM, rotating machinery, pressure or vacuum testing, electrical equipment, and restoration can require qualified personnel, current manufacturer instructions, exposure assessment, guards, containment, ventilation, monitoring, licensing, and jurisdiction-specific controls.

Suspected radioactive luminous material must not be opened or cleaned as routine hobby work. A timegrapher reading does not prove total mechanical health. A pressure-test result does not promise permanent water resistance. A microscope, XRF instrument, CT scan, or toolmark does not authenticate a whole watch by itself.

Validation performed by the build

Before publication, the build checks that:

  1. the source JSON envelope has the expected version, date, fields, and exactly 326 entries;
  2. source CSV and JSON entries match exactly, including order and values;
  3. every field is a non-empty, trimmed string;
  4. IDs are sequential and names are unique;
  5. all 326 defective significance values match the bounded transform contract;
  6. source-key CSV and JSON files match exactly and contain 33 unique records;
  7. every row cites three to six distinct, defined keys and every key is used;
  8. public CSV and JSON serialize from the same normalized records;
  9. current and dated aliases are byte-identical;
  10. the manifest records final public byte sizes and hashes.

These are structural and reproducibility checks. They do not constitute independent verification of 326 histories, a safety review, a standards review, or named expert approval.

Versioning and correction policy

Version 2026-08-24-r1 is the first derived public release from source version 1.0. The r1 suffix distinguishes the public normalization from the supplied package version and date. Future material changes receive a new dated or revision identifier; the old dated files remain stable.

Report a correction through the corrections process with the WT ID, public field, current value, proposed value, and a direct supporting source. A report is evidence to review, not automatic proof that a value should change.
